# Wiki software for a public wiki

miow hosts public wikis: their owners set out the categories and write each page in the browser, and every save is kept as a version readers can open.

## What is wiki software?

Wiki software keeps a set of linked pages that several people write and revise, with a history of every change to each page. MediaWiki, the software Wikipedia runs on, is installed on a server of your own; Fandom, GitBook, Notion and miow host the wiki for you.

## What does a miow wiki do?

A miow wiki sorts its pages into categories, each with a page of its own listing them and sections under it. A category can ask each of its pages for facts, such as a plant's light and water, and its page then lets readers narrow the list by them.

Each page shows its contents beside it, a preview of any page it links to when the pointer rests on the link, and a Cite button. A page left 180 days without a change says so at the top. Readers search the wiki from its header and follow its changes in a feed.

Owners see a Needs work list: pages not changed in 180 days, pages no other page links to, pages with no sources, and pages missing a fact their category asks for.

## Who can edit a miow wiki?

Its owners, each signing in with a passkey their phone keeps, with no password and no email. An owner adds another by sending an invite link, and gives an AI agent a key of its own under People and agents in Settings.

Every save is a new version of the page, with who made it and what it changed, and an owner can put a page back as any earlier version had it. When two people edit one page at once, the second save is refused rather than written over the first.

## Can AI agents read a miow wiki?

Yes, with no key. Every miow wiki runs its own MCP server, the protocol AI assistants use to call tools, at its address followed by /mcp: an agent lists the categories, searches, reads pages and their history, and asks what changed recently. Each page is also served as markdown at its address followed by .md, and the wiki describes itself to language models in an llms.txt.

For search engines, every wiki has a sitemap, and a heading phrased as a question is marked up as a question and its answer.

## How much does a miow wiki cost?

A wiki is free for 14 days with no card, then £15, £20 or £25 a month by its visitors: up to 2,000, 20,000 or 200,000 a month. Every wiki has every feature, shows no ads and carries no miow name or logo, and search engines and AI agents are not counted as visitors.

## How does miow compare with other wiki software?

Each product's terms are from its own pages in October 2026.

- [MediaWiki alternative](/mediawiki-alternative): the software Wikipedia runs on, on a server you run
- [Fandom alternative](/fandom-alternative): free community wikis, paid for by ads
- [GitBook alternative](/gitbook-alternative): product documentation, priced by site and member
- [Notion wiki alternative](/notion-wiki-alternative): a workspace's pages, published as a site

## Which wiki software should I choose?

The one that matches who writes the wiki. A wiki any reader can edit suits MediaWiki or Fandom; product documentation kept beside its code suits GitBook; a team's notes already in Notion can be published from Notion; a public wiki written by its owners, on their own domain and readable by AI agents, suits miow.

## What does miow leave out?

A miow wiki has no reader accounts, no open editing, no talk pages and no private pages, and it is written in blocks rather than wikitext. It imports no other wiki: pages come across by hand, or through an AI agent writing them with the wiki's key.

The editor opens on a sample wiki of houseplant care: make it yours, and publish it with a passkey.
