miow, a GitBook alternative for a public wiki
miow hosts public wikis on their owners' own domains, priced by the wiki's visitors rather than by its editors.
What is a good alternative to GitBook?
miow is one, for a public wiki or knowledge base that is not documentation kept beside a product's code. You set out the categories and write each page in the browser as it will look, and every save is kept as a version readers can open.
GitBook suits documentation for a software product: it syncs its pages with a GitHub or GitLab repository and has API playgrounds.
How is miow different from GitBook?
GitBook's figures are from its pricing page and documentation in October 2026, in US dollars on yearly billing, as its pricing page showed them.
| miow | GitBook | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free for 14 days with no card, then £15, £20 or £25 a month by the wiki's visitors: up to 2,000, 20,000 or 200,000 a month, with every feature on each, for any number of owners | Free for one member, without your own domain; Essential $65 a site a month plus $12 for each member, readers and guests included ($79 and $15 billed monthly) |
| Your own domain | Any wiki, with a domain you already own | From Essential |
| Branding | No miow name or logo | A Powered by GitBook link, which no plan removes |
| AI agents | Its own MCP server at /mcp, an llms.txt, and every page as markdown | The same three on every plan |
| Leaving | One zip of the wiki as data, its categories and every page, and every picture | Markdown, synced to a GitHub or GitLab repository |
Can I move a GitBook site to miow?
Not with an importer: a miow wiki takes no import. Its pages are written in, by hand or by an AI agent with the wiki's key. GitBook serves every page as markdown at its address followed by .md, so an agent has the words to write from.
What does miow leave out?
miow does not sync with a Git repository, and has no API playground, no review of a change before it goes live and no sign-in for readers. Documentation that depends on those stays on GitBook.
How does miow compare with other wiki software?
Wiki software compared sets miow beside MediaWiki, Fandom, GitBook and Notion.
